The United Nations-supported Principles of Responsible Investment (UN PRI) is an international network of financial institutions working towards the common goal of ‘developing a more sustainable global financial system’. With over 5,300 signatories adopting the UN PRI’s 6 Principles of Responsible Investment, the organisation supports companies across the globe in incorporating environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors into their investment and ownership decisions. Being a signatory means reporting annually to the UN PRI through a survey which assesses an organisation’s integration of responsible investment principles in their investment processes.

The UN PRI’s 6 Principles commit companies to working collaboratively to advance the responsible investment landscape, reporting on progress towards implementation of the Principles, and being active in integrating sustainability issues into investment analysis, decision-making, policies and operational processes. With more and more investors and companies appreciating the importance of ESG issues and responsible investment, it is now more important than ever to be able to demonstrate and promote responsible investment practices. Contrary to stigma, responsible investment does not have to mean investing in specific sustainable products, or lower investment returns, but creating processes and strategies which consider and integrate ESG issues into an investment lifecycle. This recognition is what sets signatories of the UN PRI apart from the wider investment industry, and ultimately facilitates resilient and sustainable business.

Following significant changes to the survey in 2023, changes made to the 2024 survey were minor, with ~90% of questions remaining unchanged, and the introduction of pre-filling responses from the 2023 survey to help ease the efforts required. The UN PRI also made the decision to make 2024 reporting more flexible, allowing signatories who reported in 2023 and met the minimum requirements the option to voluntarily report. While annual reporting for signatories is voluntary for some in 2024, it remains a valuable tool for comparison and progress measurement. The UN PRI reported that in 2023 almost 1,100 signatories voluntarily reported to the UN PRI despite being in their grace period.
